Call for Applications: DASH Masters and PhD Scholarship in Adolescent Health 2024

The University of Ghana in collaboration with seven other universities and research institutions in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Burkina Faso (National Institute of Public Health), Ethiopia (Addis Continental Institute of Public Health), Nigeria (University of Ibadan), South Africa (University of KwaZulu-Natal), Tanzania (Africa Academy for Public Health & University of Dodoma), Uganda (Makerere University); and two German institutions (Heidelberg University and Technical University of Munich) is implementing a multi-country adolescent health intervention study titled “Research network for Design and evaluation of Adolescent Health Interventions and Policies in Sub-Saharan Africa (DASH).

The overarching and long-term goal of DASH is to promote and improve adolescent health in sub-Saharan Africa through population-based intervention and policy research. The project focuses on three domains of adolescent and young adults’ health, namely (a) sexual and reproductive health (b) nutrition and physical activity, and (c) mental health and violence. The DASH partnership forms part of the Research Networks for Health Innovations in Sub-Saharan Africa (RHISSA), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

In Ghana, the study is being implemented in partnership with the Dodowa Health Research Centre of the Ghana Health Service. DASH seeks to build the capacity of young and emerging scientists through postgraduate training. We are inviting applications from suitably qualified Ghanaians to be considered for full-time master’s (12 months) and PhD (48 months) fellowships with a focus on adolescent health at the School of Public Health, University of Ghana.

Aim and Benefits of University Of Ghana DASH Masters and PhD Scholarship in Adolescent Health

The fellowship is tenable at the University of Ghana, School of Public Health, and it covers:

  • Full tuition fees.
  • Cost of research towards dissertation/thesis.
  • Cost of on-campus accommodation.
  • Monthly stipend to support living expenses (PhD).
  • Conferences and workshops attendance (PhD).

Requirements for University Of Ghana DASH Masters and PhD Scholarship in Adolescent Health Qualification

  • Applicant must be a Ghanaian.
  •  Applicant must be willing to pursue a full-time study.
  • Applicant should be able to conduct statistical analysis of data independently.
  • Willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Applicant must meet the University of Ghana admission requirements for postgraduate studies.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, including undertaking fieldwork in challenging settings.
  • Evidence of previous publication experience) will be an added advantage (PhD applicants.
  • Individuals under the age of 40 years are encouraged to apply.
  • Females are strongly encouraged to apply.

Interview date, Process and Venue for University Of Ghana DASH Masters and PhD Scholarship in Adolescent Health

Successful applicants will receive an award letter from the University of Ghana and will have 7 calendar days to confirm acceptance or otherwise. After this date, it will be assumed that the student is unable to take the scholarship and the position will be given to the next available qualified applicant. The University of Ghana reserves the right to refuse or terminate the scholarship if any information provided in support of the application is found to be false.

Step 1 (Complete University of Ghana Postgraduate Application)

1. Follow the University of Ghana postgraduate admission requirements and apply online to either Master of Public Health or PhD Public Health programme (Population, Family and Reproductive Health).

2. After the general application deadline, individuals who meet the admission requirements would be invited to participate in competitive entrance examinations comprising (a) analytical essays and (b) basic data analysis.

Step 2 (DASH Scholarship Application)

1. Complete the DASH Scholarship Application form online using the link below: https://apply.ug.edu.gh/apps/chsdash/#/

2. Upload the following documents (PDF format) on the page:

(a) A one-page cover letter

(b) Full curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting statistical analysis skills and research experience (if any).

(c) Personal statement (1 page for master’s and 2 pages for PhD applicants), indicating your suitability for a scholarship. Outline your previous research or work experience in young people’s health (if ever), and your willingness to pursue a career in adolescent health, and the specific domain.

(d) At least one letter of recommendation, specifically for the scholarship, attesting to your suitability for an award.

(e) Proof of application to the relevant postgraduate programme at the University of Ghana.

Step 3 (Interview for only shortlisted applicants)

1. Only candidates who are shortlisted after the entrance examination would be invited for an interview.

2. Successful candidates will be notified by 15 August 2024.
