Applications for the Google South Asia & Southeast Asia Research Awards 2024 are now open. Google South Asia & Southeast Asia Research Awards are focused on supporting exceptional computer science research in the region. Through this program they also intend to strengthen long-term collaborative relationships with faculty working on problems that will impact how future generations use technology.

The South Asia & Southeast Asia Research Awards intend to support faculty at universities or degree-granting research institutions in the region engaged in world-class research in all areas relevant to Google. The program also includes a sub-track to support early-career professors (faculty who have begun their faculty careers within five years of submission of application).

Funding

  • The funds granted will range from $10,000 USD – $30,000 USD and are intended to support the advancement of the professor’s research.

Eligibility

  • Open to academic researchers who are currently advising students and conducting research in technology and computing at institutions.
  • Research should focus on machine intelligence.

Evaluation Criteria

Scoring will be based on the following areas:

  • Faculty merit: Faculty is accomplished in research, community engagement, and open-source contributions, with potential to contribute to responsible innovation.
  • Research merit: Faculty’s proposed research is aligned with Google Research interests, innovative, and likely to have a significant impact on the field.
  • Proposal quality: The research proposal is clear, focused, and well-organized, and it demonstrates the team’s ability to successfully execute the research and achieve a significant impact.
  • AI Ethics principles: The research proposal strongly aligns with Google’s AI Principles
  • For research area topics that require the use of a specific product, methodology, or other constraint, they will evaluate your project based on how well it adheres to and utilizes these aforementioned factors, as well as the overall quality of your approach.

Application

Faculty can submit one application per round by including a two-page research proposal outlining their research agenda (research goals, proposed approach, expected outcomes, relation to prior work) and the faculty member’s CV. References are not included in the page limit.

Submit by August 2 at 11:59:59pm UTC-12 (AOE). Notification of decisions will be made in September.
