Program Overview
The Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarships are the result of a groundbreaking collaboration between the University of Oxford and the Mastercard Foundation. This initiative targets 400 exceptional African scholars, providing comprehensive support for them to thrive at Oxford and ultimately contribute to transformative change across the continent.
As a Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholar, you’ll be immersed in a rigorous Master’s program focused on addressing pressing challenges such as pandemic preparedness, food systems, sustainable energy, and public policy. With a focus on technical skills, entrepreneurial thinking, and collaborative leadership, the program is designed to equip you to tackle complex issues and drive innovation.
Program Benefits
The Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarship offers comprehensive support, including:
- Fully funded one-year taught Master’s course at Oxford
- Coverage of tuition fees and living expenses for international students
- Logistics support such as return flights, visa fees, settling down allowance, and emergency funds

Eligibility
To be eligible for this life-changing scholarship, you must:
- Be a citizen and resident of an African country.
- Demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to creating positive change.
- Receive a conditional offer for a Master’s program at the University of Oxford.
The program welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, particularly emphasizing underrepresented groups, including women, refugees, displaced persons, and scholars with disabilities.
How to Apply
- Apply to Oxford: Submit your application for your chosen Master’s program through the university’s graduate admissions portal before the course deadline. Indicate your interest in AfOx funding.
- Fee Waiver (if eligible): Check if you’re eligible for an application fee waiver based on your country of origin. Consider applying for the Afrisoc Mentoring program for application support and potential fee waivers.
- AfOx Scholarship Questionnaire: If you receive a conditional offer, you’ll be invited to complete the AfOx Graduate Scholarship questionnaire.
- Virtual Interview: Shortlisted candidates will participate in a virtual interview.
