CARTA PhD Fellowships 2025: Pursue Cutting-Edge Research in Public and Population Health

The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) invites applications for its prestigious 2025 PhD Fellowships dedicated to strengthening research capacity and addressing crucial health and development challenges in Africa.

What is CARTA?

CARTA is a collaborative network of African universities, research institutes, and global partners. Its mission is to empower African institutions to lead world-class research, with a special emphasis on public and population health. CARTA’s doctoral training program offers a unique opportunity for the next generation of African academics to make a lasting impact on the continent’s health and well-being.

CARTA Fellowship Benefits

In 2025, CARTA plans to award up to 15 PhD fellowships, plus two additional fellowships designated for staff members of the Somali National University (SNU). Successful fellows receive:

  • Funding for participation in advanced seminars
  • Monthly stipend
  • Research support
  • Laptop with essential software
  • International conference attendance
  • Access to specialized training programs

Eligibility

To be eligible for a CARTA PhD Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • Be a full-time teaching or research staff member at a participating African institution (see list below)
  • Have a strong research proposal focused on public and population health
  • Commit to full participation in the program’s activities
  • Be under 40 years old (men) or under 45 years old (women)

Note: CARTA fellowships are designed for early-stage PhD candidates who are defining their research proposals.

  • Moi University, Kenya
  • Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria
  • University of Ibadan, Nigeria
  • Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Malawi and Associates
  • University of Nairobi, Kenya
  • University of Rwanda, Rwanda
  • University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (note: South Africans are ineligible)
  • Somali National University, Somalia
  • African Population and Health Research Center, Kenya
  • Agincourt Health and Population Unit, South Africa
  • Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania
